Tangle’s 2016 Art Commission by Adébayo Bolaji
Our 2016 art commission is by multidisciplinary artist Adébayo Bolaji. His work addresses human observation, race, the psychological and anthropological. >
A brand new township theatre piece reflecting the themes of our 2014 Discovery Project, The Mandela Project was the much loved, Water, Bread and Salt.
Adapted by Artistic Director Anna Coombs and featuring a capella songs arranged by composer Allyson Devenish , Water, Bread and Salt was a two-part poetic piece inspired by Nelson Mandela’s original writings. The first piece, CAPTAIN OF MY SOUL, was a visceral exploration of Mandela’s personal and private thoughts. The second piece, WATERSHED, a poetic exploration of his public speeches crafted into a dynamic piece of township theatre.
Performed by Tangle Company 2014 , seven African – Caribbean actor-singers, Water Bread & Salt premiered at Yinka Shonibare’s Guest Projects Africa on 28 November 2014 as part of our annual Tangle Café night.
Water Bread & Salt then toured South West England, presenting the pieces in communities across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire in December 2014 returning to many of the venues, schools, centres and locations that we visited during the Mandela Project workshops.
